Perfectionism in yoga, why it's overrated!

If we allow perfection to take over our lives, we won’t accomplish or make progress with anything.  I realize this in my own life with many things. One of them being my yoga practice.

“Do not stop trying just because perfection eludes you.”

B.K.S. Iyengar 🖤

Every day is different in my yoga practice and sometimes it’s just not perfect.

Sometimes I’m tired. Sometimes I’m feeling wobbly and my balance seems all off. Other days I’m energized and feel like I can do flow yoga forever. Other days I rest more and skip the vinyasa’s (flow) and rest in child’s pose.

On days when I don’t feel like it, are the days when it matters the most to show up anyway and not stop trying.

Like the quote says don’t let perfection keep you from doing anything. Elude means avoiding or escaping, or maybe not doing. What does perfection look like, is it that we want to have either the perfect conditions or body or whatever excuse we tell ourselves for our practice.

Do it anyway.

Why? Because yoga feels so damn good. It feels so good to get onto my mat and just connect. Start to move the body. When I move, I breathe. When I breathe, the mind shifts.

Even if it’s not a perfect practice.

I move.

I breathe.

I connect to myself.

I connect to my breath.

I connect to my body.

And unite the three.

Mind, body, and breath.

If you can take something away from this blog post, is to show up anyway. DO NOT STOP TRYING.

Follow the 80:20 rule! Show up 80% of the time, because it’s good enough.

Why? Because perfectionism is overrated.

The 20% will not matter, as with yoga it’s about consistency in our practice. How often we show up. How much we practice over a longer span in time, like in a month or even a year. This is the 80%.
Even if it’s just 15 mins a day, get on your mat.. Rather than trying to make your yoga practice/session perfect, or if you insist on a perfect setting or the perfect yoga outfit to even step on that mat.

Ask yourself this…

Have you been avoiding getting on your mat?

What have you been telling yourself?

Are the thoughts supportive? or do you make excuses quickly for yourself?

Is the language you use supportive in nature? or defeating you in some way?

Just because it may not be a perfect time, or practice conditions or maybe a perfect outfit. Or saying to yourself I can’t do that pose (so you avoid the whole class instead of modifying and taking part anyway and still show up). Or whatever excuse under the sun, you tell yourself to prevent yourself from getting on to your mat.

PRACTICE ANYWAY!
Get on your mat!

DO NOT STOP TRYING!

It’s about showing up. Showing up for yourself and your practice. Step on that my mat my friends. Even if its just for a few mins per day. Do not stop trying.

Namaste my friends.

Be well,

Marzena
